PERSEPHONE

Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of vegetation, dedicated to her mother. She became queen of the underworld when she was kidnapped by Hades. After Persephone's abduction, Demeter begged Zeus to allow Persephone to return to the world of the living, stating that the innocent Persephone was not destined for the underworld. Zeus allowed Persephone to return to earth for one semester each year and remain with Hades for the rest of the year.

The myth of Hades and Persephone is related to Spring and Winter. When Persephone ascended to Earth, it was spring. When he descended into Hades, it was winter. Persephone's departure and return were celebrated with great feasts and festivals in ancient Greece, including the Eleusinian Mysteries.
